Light
Clivias prefer good light but should be out of direct sun. They can grow well in a bright north window, or an east or west window that's shaded from the sun.

Temperature
Clivias grow best in temperatures around 70°F during their active growth period from early spring to early fall. In late fall and early winter, bring the plant indoors to a cool room with temperatures around 50°F, such as a basement, and avoid letting it freeze. Cooler temperatures in winter can help encourage flowering in spring and early summer.

Watering
During the growing season, water clivias thoroughly when the top inch of potting mix is dry to the touch, but allow the soil to become dry between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot and is indicated by pale green or bright orange cankers on the leaves.

Fertilizing - how to care for a clivia plant
During the growing season, feed clivias once a month with a half-strength, diluted solution of 20-20-20 fertilizer, or use a slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote. You can also apply a balanced liquid houseplant feed weekly until flower buds form.

Pruning
Remove dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking tidy. After flowering has finished, you can deadhead the plant by removing the entire flower stem at the base. Wear gloves when deadheading because the sap can irritate the skin.

Clivias can be susceptible to pests like snails, slugs, fungus gnats, white fly, thrips, amaryllis caterpillars, mealybugs, aphids, scale, and mites. You can try picking off pests by hand and destroying them, or using traps or pesticides to get rid of them.
