Interior Design & Styling Inspiration: Elements for Cohesion
Do you ever think about what your interior design preferences are?
We all have our own unique style, but when it comes to designing for cohesion, there are some important basic design principles to understand.
Whether you choose to deviate from these principles is purely preferential, but there are certainly ways to do it to make it beautiful.
We recently thrifted this little cabinet because I saw that it had great potential for our interior style. Now, am going to style this area to make it complete!
I begin by introducing a properly scaled ornate mirror that shares a classic French aesthetic with the cabinet.
Next I add art and design books, one of which exemplifies neoclassical French furniture on cover.
To soften up this vignette, I add organic elements with varying textures and form. I opted to introduce pine trees of various sizes, shapes and textures. I then add a driftwood deer along with a sprouted pine cone cluster.
All these items differ in form. Yet, they share a common theme and are united through art and nature. These pieces offer a sense of cohesion through both their uniqueness and similarities.
Whether it is shape, texture, color, size etc., that makes them unique, combining any of these attributes would work. Additionally, think about how these items are similar in theme so that they can be unified in the same setting.
For this example, we love art and nature so we opted to introduce art books, pine trees of various sizes and textures and a driftwood deer. All these items are different in some form, but they are united by art and nature.
Styling is one way of communicating who you are without speaking. This is done by combining elements that are meaningful to you. A good rule of thumb is to combine pieces that are unique in some form, yet similar in concept or idea. This lends attention to the uniqueness of each piece yet, unifies them entirely as a whole.
