Begonia Lotusland

This evergreen foliage plant has large, rounded, leathery leaves and daisy-like yellow flowers. These plants make a great low hedge in tropical gardens.

  • Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy, allowing the top 2 inches to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot and mushy leaves that turn yellow, brown, and detach. Water at the base of the plant to avoid leaf rot and spots. Reduce watering in the winter.

  • Light
Begonias need good light to produce flowers and sturdy stems, but they should be protected from direct sun to prevent scorched leaves. Rex begonias prefer moderate to bright indirect light.
  • Temperature
Begonias prefer warmer temperatures and can be damaged if it drops below 50°F (10°C). Rex begonias are comfortable in average home temperatures of 65°F–75°F.
  • Humidity
Begonias prefer high humidity, but they can tolerate dry air. To increase humidity, you can place the container on a tray of gravel, expanded clay granules, or recycled lightweight aggregate and keep it moist with the water level slightly below the surface. Avoid misting, which can cause powdery mildew.
  • Fertilizing
Begonias grow best with regular fertilizer. When planting, you can apply a balanced slow-release granular fertilizer, or use a liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Established plants can be fed every two weeks from May to September with a high potassium plant food.
  • Soil

Use well-draining soil with some compost material to help retain moisture. For potted plants, you can use potting soil, and for garden beds, you can use planting mix. When planting, you can also use Root Zone starter fertilizer to promote robust root growth and reduce transplant shock.

  • Pruning

Begonias need little or no pruning, but you can pinch back stem tips if the plant becomes too leggy.
